Steiner Kékfrankos 2017

The Steiner Kekfrankos (Blaufränkisch) vineyards are among one of the best in Hungary, located near Sopron, on the southwestern shore of Lake Neusiedl. Planted in 1964, it once belonged to the Church of Hungary and covers a total of about 10 hectares. Viticulture has been practiced here for about 400 years. The Blaufränkisch vines are rooting very deeply on gneiss and mica schist with warm, dry soils, giving the wine precision and minerals. Biodynamically cultivated with low yields, this plot delivers an extremely spicy, distinctive Blaufränkisch that is also reminiscent of wines from Piedmont. Matured on the skins for 3-4 weeks and then in 500-liter wooden barrels for 24 months, then unfiltered and bottled only as necessary with minimal sulfur added. Franz Weninger stands for delicacy par exellence, and this is skillfully demonstrated with his Steiner Blaufränkisch.
