Gewürztraminer

Gewürztraminer is the aromatic bouquet of grape varieties. Originally from Alsace, it is grown around the Alps and in New Zealand and California. Gewürztraminer wines smell of ripe fruit, exotic spices and nutmeg. If the grape variety is left to mature on the skins for longer, it produces extremely exciting orange wines that have a number of fans in the natural wine scene.

Origin and distribution of Gewürztraminer

Gewürztraminer is a white grape variety known for its very intense aroma. It originally comes from Alsace in France, but is also cultivated in other European regions such as Germany, Italy and South Tyrol. Gewürztraminer has now also established itself in other parts of the world such as New Zealand, California and Australia. Gewürztraminer is a demanding variety and thrives best in cool and humid regions.

Is Gewürztraminer always sweet?

It seems that Gewürztraminer is always vinified as a sweet wine. This may be the case in many cases, especially in Alsace or South Tyrol, but most Gewürztraminer in the natural wine scene is vinified dry. The expressive aroma is trimmed down with organic and biodynamic cultivation - the grape variety also often undergoes extended maceration during fermentation, as Gewürztraminer is an excellent orange wine.

Taste and aromas of Gewürztraminer

Gewürztraminer wines are characterized by their aromas of ripe fruit such as peach, apricot and honey. They also have strong spicy notes, such as nutmeg and ginger. Floral and delicately spicy notes are also often present. Depending on the characteristics, the taste can be sweet or dry and often has a strong acidity that makes the wine fresh and appealing. Dry Gewürztraminer wines often have a mineral note and are more complex in taste. Sweet Gewürztraminer wines, on the other hand, are slightly sweet and have a higher alcohol content. They often have notes of honey, apricot and exotic fruits and are full-bodied and aromatic.

Dishes to go with Gewürztraminer

Gewürztraminer wines harmonize well with Asian dishes, especially those with ginger and sweet and sour sauces. Gewürztraminer also goes well with fish and seafood dishes such as sushi or seafood paella. Cheese, especially soft and spicy varieties, are also a suitable accompaniment. Sweet Gewürztraminer wines are particularly suitable as a dessert wine or with sweet dishes such as crème brûlée or fruit tarts.
