Where does Grüner Veltliner come from?

Grüner Veltliner originally comes from Austria, more precisely from the Wachau wine-growing region in the province of Lower Austria. The existence of the grape variety dates back to the Middle Ages and there are several theories as to how the variety originated. One of these states that Grüner Veltliner was created through the natural crossing of the Traminer and St. Georgener grape varieties.

In Austria, Grüner Veltliner is mainly grown in the Wachau, Kremstal, Kamptal, Traisental and Weinviertel wine-growing regions. With an annual production of over 70,000 hectoliters, Grüner Veltliner is the most widely cultivated grape variety in Austria. In recent years, however, the grape variety has also made a name for itself in other parts of Europe and even overseas, particularly in Germany, the Czech Republic and Slovakia, but it is not yet very widespread. It is known for producing wines of high quality, both in dry and slightly sweet versions.
