Recommended drinking order:
1.) Naturweiss 2024 VDP.GUTSWEIN, Schätzel
Imagine: an alpine meadow in full bloom, but with juicy grapefruit. Naturweiss is what Schätzel has been working towards for over ten years — a natural wine without compromise, with enormous drinkability and spice. Green tea, lemongrass, a touch of yeast, and then it pulls through like an open window in June. Open it at lunch — works as a Schorle too ;)
2.) Steiner Riesling 17-24, Schätzel
Eight vintages in one wine — from Premier and Grand Cru vineyards. Maturity works differently here. The Steiner Riesling pulls you straight in: nutty, spicy, alive, then comes the juiciness. Lime meets macadamia meets gunflint. Kai Schätzel has been doing this for years, and nobody else in Germany dares.
3.) Steiner Silvaner 20-24, Schätzel
Silvaner has an image problem. Schätzel doesn't care. Born from 5 vintages in the legendary Hipping, aged under flor yeast — and it tastes like everything Silvaner can be when you take it seriously: matcha, salted lemon, gunflint, a spiced depth that lingers.
