Robert Parker gave the likeable winegrower Philippe Gimel a proper compliment: "This could be the next hot cult winery from Provence!"

Saint Jean du Barroux: the shooting star from Provenence

Philippe Gimel is a passionate winemaker, and you can taste that very clearly. In the vineyard, he strives for careful manual work and relies on grape varieties typical of the region such as Syrah, Cinsault, Carignan and Grenache.

It was none other than his foster father Claude Gouan who advised him to buy the excellent vineyards around Barroux. Near Mont Ventoux, a large mountain in Provenance, Philippe Gimel cultivates a total of 40 mini-plots divided over 12.5 hectares, producing extremely terroir-influenced wines with concentrated fruit on clay soils from grape varieties typical of the region with enormous yield reductions, which are very reminiscent of great Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines, because they are bursting with power, aromatics and spice.

Power, flavour and spice: Terroir-influenced wines from Saint Jean du Barroux

Philippe Gimel cultivates a total of 40 mini-plots spread over 16 hectares, producing extremely terroir-driven wines with concentrated fruit that are very reminiscent of great Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines, as they are bursting with power, flavour and spice on clay soils from typical regional grape varieties with an enormous reduction in yield.

The soils of the Ventoux are varied and range from barren, sandy soils at the higher altitudes to fertile clay soils at the lower altitudes. Philippe Gimel plants low-yielding grape varieties such as Syrah, Grenache and Carignan, which adapt perfectly to these different conditions.

His aim is to produce wines that clearly demonstrate the quality potential of Ventoux.
