Lichtenberger González: Expressive natural wines

From the very beginning, the young Austrian-Spanish couple Lichtenberger González was clear that they wanted to produce natural wines of the highest quality. And this under the maxim that every wine should be given the time it needs to become as nature intended.

Adriana and Martin more than live up to this claim thanks to their experiences from studies and wineries around the globe, the special climatic soil-geological conditions of their sites and, last but not least, the magic that this winemaker-love affair quite obviously carries within itself.

Lichtenberger Gonzalez work with precision and a passion for their craft

With Blaufränkisch, Neuburger, Grüner Veltliner and Pinot Blanc, the Lichtenberger González winery cultivates exclusively autochthonous (=local) grape varieties with conviction. Everything is organic, with meticulous manual work and a lot of passion, special natural wines are produced here, all of which are bottled after spontaneous fermentation, without filtration or fining and with minimal use of sulphur.

The result is great, terroir-driven and deep natural wines with elegantly integrated acidity and grippy structure. Salty, delicate and with subtle pressures, Adriana and Martin Lichtenberger Gonzalez are masters of elevage, a term that refers to the maturation and process of winemaking from fermentation to bottling.

In doing so, they give the wines the time they need. Many wines come to market only after 2-3 years of maturation, such as the Weißburgunder, Tres Cuartos or the Leithaberg Rot.

From Burgenland to California and back to the "end of the world".

This said end of the world, as Adriana and Martin call it themselves, is in Burgenland. In Breitenbrunn, to be precise. A truly exceptional place between the Leithagebirge and Lake Neusiedl. In addition to the special microclimate, the vines here also grow on a special soil composition that offers excellent conditions for demanding viticulture.

At the very top of the Edelgraben, you will find pure slate, while further down you will find barren limestone soils that provide the tautness and saltiness of the wines. For a few bucks, the Muschelkalk Weiß and Muschelkalk Rot already deliver a lot of soil aromatics and terroir into the glass.

But this special Austrian-Spanish love affair started somewhere else. Adriana González, whose home is Galicia, Spain, and Martin Lichtenberger, from Burgenland, met during an internship abroad in Sonoma, California. There they were hit by Armor's arrow and decided to realise their dream of owning their own winery in Martin's home town of Breitenbrunn.

Artisanal. Natural. Different. Lichtenberger González make wine like in the old days.

"Winemaking is such an old craft that it no longer needs any innovation. Everything, really everything, that is good about it has long been invented. Much of it already forgotten. Even more buried and much, suppressed by the pursuit of maximum profit and greatest complaisance. So don't expect us to be on the same taste highway as most.

On the contrary. We amble along at a snail's pace on byways, making our wines slowly and patiently by hand, the way they have always been made. Spontaneous fermentation, in wood, long on the yeast and with minimal intervention. Nature herself knows quite well what she wants and does not need any certificates to be completely herself. Just like us"

- Martin Lichtenberger González
