House, farm, people, animals, agriculture - Meinklang

A farm as an organism, supported not only by people, but also by living creatures and animals, which contribute an essential part in the so-called farm individuality with all its diversity and complexity. At Meinklang, the vineyard is seen as a biotope, protected and surrounded by natural varnishes and valuable greening plants.

The multi-generation farm is basically a versatile farm, an independent mixed economy, managed according to gut feeling and instinct. The greenery is a natural competitor to the vines, a kind of deliberate competition for nutrients, which has an extremely positive effect on the development of aromas and phenols in the grapes. And you can taste this liveliness and freshness with every sip. Only a living soil ensures vital and robust vines, which in turn produce a wine that is completely authentic and full of character.

With the Concrete egg, Meinklang relies on a completely new methodology in the maturation

The vineyards of the Michlits family extend to the Hungarian side up to Mount Somló. On the Austrian side, classic grape varieties such as Blaufränkisch and Grüner Veltliner are cultivated, while on the Hungarian side, the autochthonous (= native) grape varieties Harslevelü and Juhfark grow. Natural wines are mostly matured in concrete eggs, a completely new method in modern viticulture that gives the must exactly the right amount of natural oxygen. However, the history of this storage method goes back to the Romans, who used concrete containers as water reservoirs. There are no modern, high-tech bells and whistles in the cellar and, of course, no further fining, as if the wines were not beautiful on their own.

Werner Michlits, winemaker at Meinklang, developed his own "non-cutting" method

Vines are liana plants by nature, climbing along trees and shrubs to meet the light. But the usual low wire frame they are often pressed into these days is not beneficial to their well-being, according to Meinklang. That is why Werner Michlits has developed his own "non-cutting method": In an ever-growing part of his vineyards, the vines are no longer pruned at all. They are allowed to unfold naturally and do what seems intuitively right to them. The berries remain small, which gives them a relatively high skin content and gives the wines a lot of desired extract.

Since these vineyards look unkempt, Meinklang has named this wine "Graupert" - a Burgenland dialect term meaning "shaggy".

Natural wines from Meinklang offer a colourful variety

The vineyards of the Michlits family extend all the way to the extinct Somló volcano on the Hungarian side. Grape varieties such as Blaufränkisch, Pinot Gris and Grüner Veltliner Harslevelü and Juhfark thrive magnificently on the mineral, volcanic soils, which are interspersed with basalt, loess and fine sand. The soil is loose, aerated and stores heat optimally - ideal conditions for the vines. You can feel this vital, fresh note in every wine. They are not tiring, but always make you want to take another sip.

With just under 800 hectares, the wine-growing area around the Somlo is the smallest in Hungary. In the past, the vineyards and slopes were owned by noble families, but today they are characterised by numerous small plots, which are also used by Meinklang. Picturesque little houses, fruit trees and gardens lend the region a picturesque charm - an idyllic sight that underlines the beauty of this unique wine-growing region. And with it, the unique natural wines from the Meinklang winery.
