Hochegg Morillon 2021

100% Chardonnay, which is called Morillon in Styria, from 20-year-old vines on barren, brown-coloured slate soils with iron content from the Hochegg site. Karl works extremely meticulously, biodyn and manual labour in extreme form, harvesting takes place at the beginning of October, with strict selection and only the best grape material being processed. Spontaneous fermentation in open vats with manual pigeage and 30 days of maceration, then aged for 12 months in used barriques. The Morillon Hochegg 2021 is probably Schnabel's most masculine orange wine, the ripe aromatics are countered on the palate with a taut mouthfeel, cool minerality and salty finish. The barren slate soil lends a vibrant precision, this is Champions League in a natural context. Hand bottled in small batches unfiltered and without sulphur. Karl Schnabel's natural wines are purist ambassadors of their terroir and a flagship for natural wines from Styria.
