Steiner Kékfrankos 2020

The Steiner Kekfrankos (Blaufränkisch) vineyards are among the best vineyards in Hungary near Sopron, on the south-western shore of Lake Neusiedl. Planted in 1964, it once belonged to the Church of Hungary and covers a total of around 10 hectares, and viticulture has been practiced here for around 400 years. The Kekfrankos is deeply rooted here on gneiss and mica schist with warm, dry soils, which gives the wine phenomenal precision and minerality. Biodynamically cultivated with low yields, this site produces an extremely spicy, silky Blaufränkisch that is also reminiscent of wines from the Jura or Burgundy. Matured for 3-4 weeks on the skins and then 24 months in 500-liter wooden barrels, then unfiltered and only bottled with minimal sulphur added if necessary. Franz Weninger stands for finesse par excellence, and this is skillfully demonstrated with the Steiner Kekfrankos 2020.
