Vinification

Riesling Monopol Großes Gewächs 2022 from Odinstal

The heart of the Odinstal, the monopollage, forms the basis for this Riesling GG. Vines on barren, stony soils, cultivated biodynamically and harvested by hand. Spontaneously fermented, with long yeast storage, minimal sulphur and a lot of patience in the ageing process. Even on the nose, it shows present reduction, matchstick, crushed rock and herbal notes of yarrow, fennel green and lemon balm. This is accompanied by tart fruit of salted lemon, quince and yellow apple. The palate is gripping, textured, vibrantly salty and with a fine tannin structure. Andreas Schuhmann has created a wine that radiates calm and depth, yet remains incredibly complex - the quintessence of Odinstal. Like all natural wines from Odinstal, bottled unfiltered.

In the 1990s, it was unimaginable to make wine so high up in the Palatinate. However, in times of climate change, the Odinstal vineyard, which sits 350 meters above the town of Wachenheim, is set to make history.
