Sauvignon Blanc

The aromatic bouquet among the grape varieties and quickly identified in the blind tasting. The bouquet is dominated by floral aromas of fresh, green grass and redcurrants and gooseberries. If the yield is reduced and the Sauvignon Blanc is left on the skins for longer, wonderfully delicate orange wines are produced - the best examples can be found in Styria.

Usually quickly identified in blind tasting, the Sauvignon Blanc is a true bouquet of flowers

Typical aromas here are fresh, green grass and redcurrant and gooseberry. But it is not only loud and expressive: in France and Styria, very fine, subtle products with very good ageing potential are produced. The hype about Sauvignon Blanc began in the 90s in New Zealand, when the Cloudy Bay winery literally reinvented the grape variety.

The exotic started a worldwide triumphal procession and was simply copied stylistically by many wineries. Sauvignon is often loud and aromatic, but in Styria or France it can also be incredibly mineral, complex and fine. You can like the former, but you don't have to. Sauvignon Blanc is extremely versatile and, with reduced yields, also presents itself as elegantly as Riesling or Pinot Noir.

In the wine-growing regions of Sancerre, Pouilly-Fumé and Touraine in the Loire, Sauvignon usually dominates the vineyards and produces amazing qualities. Whether long on the mash as Orange Wine or aged in barriques, Sauvignon Blanc is an all-rounder and a very popular grape variety among connoisseurs worldwide.

Where does Sauvignon Blanc come from?

Sauvignon Blanc originally comes from the Bordeaux region of France. The name "Sauvignon" is derived from the French word "sauvage", which means "wild" and refers to the wild nature of the grape and its rampant characteristics. The grape variety is closely related to Cabernet Sauvignon and has been cultivated since the 18th century.

Where is Sauvignon Blanc grown?

Sauvignon Blanc is grown all over the world, particularly in France, New Zealand, Chile, South Africa and the USA. In France, the Loire region is known for its Sauvignon Blanc, particularly in Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé. In Austria, the grape variety is mainly found in southern Styria, where wineries such as Tement and Neumeister produce internationally recognised examples.

In New Zealand, Sauvignon Blanc is planted in Marlborough and is famous for its intense, grassy and tropical flavours. In Chile, the grape variety is grown in the Casablanca region and is known for its elegant acidity. In South Africa, Sauvignon Blanc is native to the Constantia region and in the USA, the grape variety is widespread in California.

On which soils and in which climate does Sauvignon Blanc grow particularly well?

Sauvignon Blanc thrives best in cool climates with moderate sunlight and well-drained soils. The grape prefers loamy soils with a high lime or slate content, which contribute to a slow ripening process and better acidity. In France and New Zealand, Sauvignon Blanc thrives particularly well in these conditions.

What does Sauvignon Blanc taste like and what goes with it?

Sauvignon Blanc is known for its intense flavours of grass, green pepper, gooseberry, grapefruit and tropical fruits such as passion fruit and mango. The wine often has a crisp acidity and can have a mineral flavour. However, the flavour of Sauvignon Blanc can vary depending on the climate and soil. In cooler climates, the wines can be grassier and more peppery, while in warmer regions the tropical flavours can be more pronounced.

Sauvignon Blanc is ideal with light and fresh dishes, such as seafood, salads, green vegetables, sushi and goat's cheese. The wine's crisp acidity and intense flavours go perfectly with these dishes and provide a refreshing taste
