Zweigelt

The Zweigelt is an Austrian red wine and a grape variety named after its creator, Dr Fritz Zweigelt. This grape variety is a cross between Blaufränkisch and St. Laurent and has developed into one of the most widespread red wine varieties in Austria. It is known for its adaptability to different terroirs and produces wines that range from light and fruity to strong and spicy.

The Zweigelt presents a range of flavours, including dark cherries, berry fruits and a subtle spiciness. The wines can have an elegant tannin structure and are often accompanied by lively acidity. In principle, most Zweigelt is produced as a heavy red wine, which is why it has become less important in recent years. Winegrowers mostly use the grape variety for blending cuvées, as it delivers the right amount of fruit.

As a rule, Zweigelt wines are usually heavy and dry. Dryness is often a characteristic that characterises wines from this grape variety. This aspect makes them a popular accompaniment for a variety of dishes, from savoury meat dishes to lighter vegetable dishes.
