Sylvaner 2023

Jens Currlin may be a hobby winemaker, but his Sylvaner tastes nothing like a hobby. On the contrary, it looks as if he has been doing this professionally for years. In Bad Dürkheim, he cultivates a small plot of old Sylvaner vines that thrive on glacial loess - using only organic methods and careful manual labor. All work steps in the vineyard are carried out meticulously and this precision and delicacy is noticeable in the end. Jens leaves the must on the skins for a long time and gently presses it after 12 hours so that every last bit of DNA and tannin flows into the juice. Spontaneously fermented and matured for 13 months in used French barriques, whereby he carries out a battonage - stirring up the yeast - 2-3 times so that the wine becomes somewhat more reductive. The result is a top-class, terroir-driven Sylvaner. Earthy and mineral with complex herbal spice, a noble reduction stands out on the nose. Unfiltered and bottled with very little sulphur. This is Sylvaner at its best! We are delighted to have got hold of a tiny quantity of it.
