Steiner Riesling 17-24

The Steiner Riesling is a liquid archive. Vintages from 2017 to 2024 lie together in large oak barrels of 1200 and 5000 liters, Premier Cru and Grand Cru terroir from the Roter Hang: Ölberg, Hipping, Pettenthal, all 100% red slate, steep slopes, hand-picked, biodynamic according to Demeter. No vintage on the label, because this is not a vintage issue. The blend varies depending on which barrels are most convincing at the time of cuvetting, on average 44 months of barrel maturation. All batches mature under flor yeast, as in the Jura, as in Jerez, but with a precision that is the opposite of oxidative: radiantly clear, stable, pure-toned. This is Schätzel's core competence and simply no one else in Germany has it. Steiner Riesling is spontaneously fermented, foot-stomped, cold macerated for 24 hours, then slowly pressed. No fining, no added sulphur in the barrel, bottled unfiltered in October 2025. The Solera system brings a harmony that no single vintage can achieve: the energy of the young, the depth of the old, all in one glass. On the nose: brioche, macadamia, gunpowder, dried apricots, a fine spiciness reminiscent of old vaulted cellars. In the mouth: lime, citrus grass, umami, salt, and that pull that just doesn't stop.
