Straka

Thomas Straka represents the modern Burgenland. He has succeeded in bringing new fame to a supposedly inconsequential grape variety: Welschriesling with character, structure and depth is a little hype today.

Thomas Straka conjures up a modern, Austrian style of wine

Burgenland, Austria: On the southern slopes of the Geschriebenstein, the young winemaking talent Thomas Straka is shaking up the tranquil wine village of Rechnitz. Between tradition and modernity, a modern Austrian wine style is being created here that is both purist and lively and gives the local grape varieties Blaufränkisch and Welschriesling a new face.

The strong temperature fluctuations between day and night in this northern part of southern Burgenland create a microclimate that allows the grapes to ripen for a long time and produces particularly mineral and firm wines.

The Straka winery works with time and patience - and ancient vines on crystalline slate

Thomas Straka counts himself lucky with his vines, which are up to 80 years old and bring out both the origin and the complexity in the wines. Welschriesling grows on the 12-hectare vineyard, Blaufränkisch, Pinot Blanc and also some Furmint on green, crystalline slate - a unique selling point that defines the style of Straka wines. The wines are fermented spontaneously in the cellar and the lively wines are carefully matured in various containers of steel and large wooden barrels. Thomas gives the wines the time they need before they are bottled unfiltered and delight the soul and palate.

Straka lifts Welschriesling on a superstar level

In addition to the red Blaufränkisch, the focus in the winery clearly belongs to Welschriesling. Not to be confused with "Riesling", which despite the name is not related. The grape variety, which is especially widespread in Austria, is known as a tangy, uncomplicated wine with a green apple scent. And is usually considered a rather inconsequential grape variety. However, the potential of "Welsch" is impressively proven by Thomas Straka with his wines, which produce a wonderful complexity, structure, depth and an inviting play of aromas.

Straka wines convince with depth, length and minerality

With the Welschriesling Rechnitz, Thomas conjures up a wonderfully mineral, slightly creamy natural wine in the bottle. With the Ready Steady Go! the grape variety also gets a fine, bubbly, animating sparkling wine representative. We love it!"

Thomas also proves his stylistically confident hand with the reds: his Blaufränkisch wines deliver immense juiciness and freshness, without missing out on the classic sour cherry and pepper flavours. The Blaufränkisch Grünschiefer is certainly one of the best reds in the whole of Burgenland with its price/performance ratio!
