Courage 2020

Southern Styria, Austria. Courage combines 2/3 Pinot Blanc and 1/3 Chardonnay from 20 to 40-year-old vines in the Wielitschberg vineyard. These grow on mighty limestone reefs as well as on barren limestone marl and cool clay soils. Alongside Zieregg and Grassnitzberg, Wielitschberg is part of the Tements' famous triangle of vineyards. Biodynamic cultivation and manual harvesting in small crates are a matter of course; the Tement winery is one of the most progressive wineries in Austria and is considered a flagship. The grapes are destemmed and, after a short maceration period, pressed into used barriques, where the wine matures for a full 42 months and finds its brilliance and depth. At no point was it filtered or sulphurized, enabling Courage to reveal the extraordinary terroir as unadulterated as possible. There is a brutal tension on the palate, what energy. The acidity is as precise as the blade of a katana. Lots of wet stones, salty lemons and a finish that seems endless.
